New method for posting photos here from Flickr

Sorry if this has already been discussed. But the new beta version of Flickr (could change with the final version, of course) no longer allows you to get the link of a specific size of a picture. In the past, you could go to the medium sized photo and the link would be at the bottom. No more.

The workaround (in Windows at least) is to access the size of the photo you want (medium for this forum) and then right click>copy this location.

Getting to the size is also a bit different but no problem. The full process is (from the main picture page in Flickr)

Actions>View all sizes>Medium640 (there are now two medium sizes>right click>choose "copy this location">in Digital Darkroom select the image icon above the posting box>right click>paste>and Bob's your uncle.

Sounds a bit inconvenient - perhaps better to resize before uploading?

I do resize mine before uploading to Flick4r and the still get the choice of size before posting. Is this new version going to be obligatory do you know, or can I stick to my old tried and tested method?? (stuck in the mud!!)!

Right, re-sizing before you upload won't solve the problem since in this Flickr version you can't grab a link to the picture. You can only get a link to the main picture page, which has a lot more than the picture (comments from other Flickr members, groups the picture is in, etc.). That link will not display the picture here in DD using IMG tags. So at this point, the only way to post a picture here from Flickr is to use the workaround I noted.

You can still use the old version of Flickr. At the top of your main picture page, you will see:

You're viewing the new photo page. Questions? See these FAQs. Want to wait? Leave the preview.

Click "Leave the preview" and you'll be back to the old Flickr interface. But you'll get this message: "If you opt-out you can continue to use the current photo page until the finalized version of the new page is released. When the new page is fully released, it will be the exclusive viewing option for all images on Flickr."

Apparently it is against Flickr rules to link back to a picture rather than to the photo page.
So far, my workaround works. I hope that Flickr can't find a way to disable it. If they do, I'll have to find another way to post here.

This is a discussion on Flickr about this issue plus a few other workarounds.

I always thought you could use the direct image link as long as you posted a URL pointing to the actual page.

With me, I upload at either 800x or 1024x depending on my plan then I can click on 'All Sizes' and get the relevant size from there.

But if they are faffing around with it there then perhaps I need to look at other options again for my online collections

You can still get to the relevant size (although you do so in a slightly different way), but once you get there, the URL of that page (which used to be at the bottom) is gone. So you'd need to use one of the workarounds to get the URL.

Right click, properties, see the URL and copy it.

Of course, I'm using Firefox with a few addons to help but even so

Interesting discussion. I use Photobucket (free membership version), but it seems that everytime I go there they've changed things. Gets frustrating with all the ads that expand larger when you accidently get your the mouse cursor near them. Guess I can't complain too much for something free, lol.

I think I will continue to host anything I want to post on my own server.

I think this is just another one of those " It ain't broke but I'll fix it anyway " deals.

Progress is not always best in my opinion.

Just to explain Flickr's point of view: they do feel it is broke. They want to discourage people from doing what we are doing here: posting a picture on our forum while Flickr pays for the bandwidth every time someone looks at that picture. There are two problems with that issue. First, if we did what Flickr wants and just post links back to the main picture page, Flickr would still be paying for the bandwidth. (Flickr would probably say in that case they would at least be getting people who might eventually become members to their site.)
Second, there are so many workarounds, merely making it a bit harder for people just annoys them without solving anything.

If I were the king of Flickr, I would just add a modest fee-- say $5-10/year -- for the right to link back to pictures posted on Flickr pictures.
